The speculation that McKenna would eventually run has been rampant for years - taking the job in Washington was widely seen as his leap back into political life. Manley was running second to Martin in 2003, ahead of Copps, before he stepped down from the race.

As for the others, you can't read a story without seeing Ignatieff's name bandied about - ditto for Brison and Stronach. And there has been of late a substantial "draft Dion" movement among the journalistic community - with Paul Wells and Chantal Hebert among those writing in favour of this. Dion's positions on federalism are well known, and very well liked. Cauchon's leadership ambitions are also better known - he hasn't made much of a secret of his organization (although overcoming the fact that his last name rhymes with the French word for "pig" will be a challenge).

I think what we're seeing right now is an initial whittling down of the field. Spinning the story as "nobody wants to lead the Liberal party" may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it is suspicious that in what should be an open race, none of the people who wanted the job three years ago - Rock, Tobin, McKenna, Manley - are in the game anymore.Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02223884864363791487noreply@blogger.com
